Bathroom Lighting Tips

The three most important lighting concerns are task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent or decorative lighting. Don’t chose lighting just for the looks; don’t choose lighting just for the purposes.

Task lighting must illuminate work-specific areas. Whether one is reading, shaving, reading, exercising , applying makeup, or styling hair, the lighting must live up to the needs of the user. This type of light would be on only when needed. A direct beam toward the reading area, a couple of lights on each side of a mirror, and a light over the vanity are all types of task lighting. These lights should provide light in the natural daylight spectrum. Yellow or white will not show reality when applying makeup. Recessed lights for showers, tubs, and toilet areas will prove to do extremely helpful and well worth the installation.

Ambient lighting allows one to move safely, and also allows one to adjust the intensity. If reading in the tub, dimmers can increase intensity, or if relaxing in a bubble bath, dimmers can decrease the light to create a relaxing atmosphere. This lighting should be able to provide a soft, warm feeling. Low-lying LED lights or lights that are generally known as step lights could do this. Wall-mounted lights can also provide mood lighting. Be sure that all fixtures which you choose are made expressly for the bathroom; do not choose lights for other parts of the house. They must comply with current bathroom lighting regulations with regards to safety.

Accent/decorative lighting aid in creating a particular atmosphere or effect. This could be track lighting, chandeliers, candles, or even fireplace flames. Accent lighting can be used to highlight a piece of art or an intricate area of tile work and give the room depth. Keeping these lights simple, but elegant, will add to the opulent feeling of your space.
Keeping these tips in mind can help you have lighting that is both functional and beautiful.
